Are Adderall and Concerta the Same Thing?

Both Adderall and Concerta are stimulants that treat ADHD, but Adderall contains an amphetamine while Concerta contains methylphenidate.

Both Adderall XR (amphetamine and dextroamphetamine salts) and Concerta (methylphenidate extended release tablets) are central nervous system stimulants.

Both Adderall XR and Concerta are used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). 

Adderall XR is also used to treat narcolepsy.

Side effects of both Adderall XR and Concerta include:

• Headache
• Stomach pain
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Loss of appetite
• Dry mouth
• Sleep problems (insomnia)
• Nervousness
• Anxiety
• Dizziness
• Irritability
• Weight loss
• Vision problems

Chronic use of Adderall XR or Concerta may lead to dependency. 

Adderall XR may also cause: 

• Restlessness
• Agitation
• Excitability
• Fear
• Weakness
• Unpleasant taste in mouth
• Diarrhea
• Constipation
• Tremor
• Loss of interest in sex
• Difficulty having an orgasm
• Impotence
• Increased blood pressure
• Increased heart rate
• Palpitations

Concerta may also cause: 

• Skin rash
• Sweating
• Numbness/tingling/cold feeling in the hands or feet

Severe depression may occur when Concerta use is discontinued.
