Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that is a pain reliever and fever reducer.
It is used for:
- Temporary relief of minor aches and pains due to:
- Headache
- Backache
- Menstrual cramps
- Muscle aches
- Minor arthritis pain
- Toothache
- Inflammation from sprains and strains
- The common cold
- Temporary reduction of fever
What Are Side Effects of Ibuprofen?
Common side effects of ibuprofen include:
- Stomach and abdominal pain
- Heartburn
- Dizziness
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Constipation
- Headache
- Rash
- Ringing in the ears
- Swelling (edema)
- Fluid retention
- Skin peeling
- Sun sensitivity (photosensitivity reactions)
Serious side effects of ibuprofen include:
- Acute kidney failure
- Severe reduction in white blood cells (agranulocytosis)
- Aplastic anemia
- Erythematous macular rashes
- Hemolytic anemia (with or without positive direct antiglobulin test results)
- Low white blood cell count (neutropenia)
- Low blood platelets (thrombocytopenia) (with or without rash)
- Exfoliative dermatitis
- Toxic epidermal necrolysis (Lyell syndrome)
- Steven's Johnson syndrome
