It generally doesn’t matter whether amlodipine is taken in the morning, afternoon, or evening, but it is best to take it at the same time every day when you are most likely to remember to take it to keep blood levels even so the drug is most effective.

Amlodipine (Norvasc) is a calcium channel blocker used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Amlodipine works by relaxing blood vessels so blood can flow more easily. Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems.

Amlodipine is also used to prevent certain types of chest pain (angina). It may help to increase the ability to exercise and decrease the frequency of angina attacks.

It generally doesn’t matter whether amlodipine is taken in the morning, afternoon, or evening, but it is best to take it at the same time every day when you are most likely to remember to take it to keep blood levels even so the drug is most effective.

  • If amlodipine is taken to treat high blood pressure, there might be an advantage to taking it at night. The body has circadian rhythms that respond to light and dark and follow a 24-hour cycle. In some cases, considering the body’s natural circadian rhythms can help the body respond better to medications.
  • In the case of blood pressure, in people who have normal blood pressure, it tends to rise and fall in a predictable pattern: it surges upon waking and increases throughout the day, only to drop a bit at night while sleeping. In some people who have high blood pressure, their blood pressure does not go down, or even increases, while they sleep. Taking amlodipine at night before bed may help some patients with hypertension keep blood pressure lower overnight.
